One of Ireland’s most successful musical exports, U2 has a career in music spanning across four decades. Larry Mullen, Adam Clayton, David Howell Evans, better known as The Edge, and Paul David Hewson, or Bono when he fronts the band, are the four musicians who met around Mullen’s kitchen table in 1976 in suburban Artane, north Dublin, and subsequently went on to become one of the world’s most successful music acts. In the 1980s they took to the world stage, signing a record deal with Island Records and conquering the charts worldwide. Their unrivalled performance in 1985 for Live Aid cemented their status as pioneers in the music industry and their 1987 album The Joshua Tree earned them two Grammy Awards. The Joshua Tree tour was undoubtedly the hottest ticket of the year, with these Archive images showcasing the energy and charisma of the group as they performed to a home crowd throughout the 1980s.
